Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of preparing content so that AI assistants — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews — can confidently understand, quote, and cite it inside synthesized answers. Traditional SEO ranked a page; GEO competes for a sentence inside an answer.
Answer engines retrieve a handful of candidate passages, rank them by relevance and trust, then synthesize a response that often cites two to four URLs. Three signals dominate: semantic clarity, evidence density, and source reputation.
Track AI visibility the same way you track rankings. Run a recurring prompt set across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and AI Overviews. Record which queries cite your domain, the exact sentence quoted, and the position of the citation. Pair this with referral traffic from chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, and gemini.google.com in GA4.
